AN “INSTANT” VERSE STUDY

Bible Study Software

One of our favorite Bible software tools, WORDsearch, has one of our favorite Bible study features called “Instant Verse Study” or “IVS.” Here’s how it works:

That’s all there is to it.

A quick IVS of the three verses that make up the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), for example, gave us almost 20 pages of information from just ten of the commentaries we selected from our electronic library.

While one of the big advantages of Bible software is not having to deal with a lot of printed material, this feature is a quick and simple way to print out raw information that you can take with you and review when pulling out the laptop just isn’t a viable or preferred option.

See our WORDsearch page for other reasons we like this tool.

Study Guides

There are a lot of good, solid study guides to choose from, whether you are doing an individual study to increase you personal understanding of God’s Word or doing it as part of a group through shared knowledge and discussion.

In the “Life Change Series” that covers all of the New Testament and several books of the Old Testament, each study takes a section of scripture and guides you on an exploration that includes questions to help you think about the meaning of the text then, relevance of the teaching to circumstances and life “today,” and challenges for you to act on what you have studied. Bits of commentary on key words and phrases strewn throughout each study, as well as a list of additional discussion questions “for the group” are why this series from NavPress (the Navigators people) is one of our favorite tools for in-depth, making-it-real personal and group Bible study.

See our Tools page for more info on this and other solid study guides.

BIBLE DICTIONARIES

Resources 101

Here’s just one example of the information that can be gleaned from a good Bible dictionary:

Galilee, Sea of - (Mat 4:18; Mat 15:29), is mentioned in the Bible under three other names.

This sea is chiefly of interest as associated with the public ministry of our Lord. Capernaum, "his own city" (Mat 9:1), stood on its shores. From among the fishermen who plied their calling on its waters he chose Peter and his brother Andrew, and James and John, to be disciples, and sent them forth to be "fishers of men" (Mat 4:18, 22; Mark 1:16-20; Luke 5:1-11). He stilled its tempest, saying to the storm that swept over it, "Peace, be still" (Mat 8:23-27; Mark 7:31-35); and here also he showed himself after his resurrection to his disciples (John 21).
